A brief history of The Houston Texans
The Texans are one of the youngest teams in the National Football League, having started in 2002 as an expansion organization. Below we’ve put together a brief timeline of the history of the Texans:
- 2022: Lovie Smith is hired as the Texans’ new head coach.
- 2021: David Culley is hired as the team’s new head coach and fired following his single season at the helm.
- 2020: Bill O’Brien is fired after an 0-4 start to the season and replaced by interim head coach Romeo Crennel.
- 2018: Team owner Bob McNair dies in November, passing the ownership of the team to his wife Janice and son Cal.
- 2015: Texans win their third-ever AFC South championship and make the playoffs.
- 2013: Gary Kubiak is fired with three games left in the season and replaced by former Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien.
- 2012: Houston repeats as AFC South champs, and J.J. Watt is selected as the NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
- 2011: Houston wins the AFC South title and chooses J.J. Watt in the NFL Draft.
- 2010: Houston makes the playoffs for the first time in team history.
- 2006: Receiver Andre Johnson led the NFL in receptions with 103. Gary Kubiak, a Houston native, is hired as the team’s head coach after Dom Capers is fired.
- 2002: Houston plays its first game ever, and it just so happened to be against the Dallas Cowboys.
- 2001: The Texans announce the hiring of their first-ever coach, Dom Capers, after being inaugurated into the NFL.

Arian Foster, who played for the Texans from 2009 to 2015, is the career record holder for rushing touchdowns for the franchise with 54. The next person on the list is Domanick Williams, who played only from 2003 to 2005 and collected 23 rushing scores.
